Founding of San Antonio at Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo)

In 1718 Spanish governor Martín de Alarcón established Mission San Antonio de Valero and the Presidio San Antonio de Béxar, laying the foundation for Villa de Béxar, the settlement that became San Antonio. The mission later became known as the Alamo and was the focal point of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. The Alamo site is preserved as a museum and historic landmark on Alamo Plaza.
