Evelyn McHale's jump from the Empire State Building

On May 1, 1947, Evelyn McHale died after jumping from the 86th-floor observation area of the Empire State Building. Her body landed on a car on West 34th Street and was photographed by Robert Wiles; Life magazine published the image under the caption "The Most Beautiful Suicide." The incident became one of the most widely circulated and discussed photographs of a suicide from that era.
