Weeping Beech at Green-Wood Cemetery

A historic weeping beech planted in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn in the mid-19th century became one of New York City's earliest and most famous ornamental trees, planted around 1847. The tree and its progeny were influential in introducing the weeping beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula') to American landscapes. While the original trunk has declined over time, descendants and clonal growth from the original specimen remain within the cemetery grounds and are noted in historical records.
