Murder of John Lennon outside The Dakota

John Lennon was shot and fatally wounded by Mark David Chapman on the sidewalk outside The Dakota apartment building on December 8, 1980. The attack occurred as Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono were returning to their home; Lennon was pronounced dead at Roosevelt Hospital shortly afterward. The Dakota's address has since been frequently cited in accounts of the assassination and in discussions of celebrity-targeted violence. Chapman's conviction for second-degree murder followed a guilty plea in 1981.
