1966 UT Tower shootings (Charles Whitman)

On August 1, 1966, Charles Whitman ascended the observation deck of the Main Building (UT Tower) at the University of Texas and shot people from the tower, killing 16 and wounding 31. Law enforcement officers returned fire and fatally shot Whitman on the observation deck. An autopsy later found a brain tumor, and whether the tumor contributed to Whitman’s actions has been debated by researchers and historians.
