Moot Hall, Wirksworth

The Moot Hall in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, is a historic judicial building dating back to 1814, designed in neoclassical style. It serves as the meeting place for the barmote court, which regulates the local lead mining industry, a practice that dates back to 1288. The building features an asymmetrical facade with a prominent entrance and stone panels depicting mining tools. Notably, it houses a bronze dish presented by King Henry VIII for measuring lead ore. The Moot Hall not only functions as a court for mining disputes but also has a history of handling criminal cases related to mining activities. Today, it remains a Grade II listed building and is owned by the Duchy of Lancaster.
