Lok Bhavan, Gangtok

Lok Bhavan, formerly known as Raj Bhavan, serves as the official residence of the Governor of Sikkim in Gangtok. Built in 1889 by John Claude White, a British Political Officer, the residence is set in a picturesque location surrounded by lush forests and offers stunning views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range. The site, chosen for its beauty and protection from storms, became a point of curiosity for local Sikkimese, who were fascinated by its European architectural style. Following India's independence in 1947, the residence transitioned from a British Political Officer's home to the Raj Bhavan, reflecting Sikkim's evolving political landscape. Today, the expansive 75-acre compound features gardens and orchards, making it not only a historical site but also a serene retreat amidst nature.
