Fernwood (Brookline, Massachusetts)

Fernwood is a historic estate house located at 155 Clyde Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, built in 1909 and showcasing the distinctive Jacobethan architectural style. As one of the few remaining country estate houses from the early 20th century in the area, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The estate, originally owned by Thomas Handasyd Perkins, features a 2+1⁄2-story masonry structure with brick walls, limestone trim, and unique architectural details such as steeply pitched gables and round-arch doorways. Designed by Charles Patch with landscaping by the Olmsted Brothers, Fernwood reflects the popular Tudor Revival style of its time. Although Alfred Douglass, the estate's builder, lived there briefly before financial difficulties forced him to sell, the property remains a notable historical site for visitors and researchers interested in early 20th-century architecture and local history.
