1969 Stonewall raid and arrests

On June 28, 1969, New York City police conducted a raid on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar at Christopher Street, and arrested several patrons and employees. The arrests and the crowd's response sparked a series of protests and clashes with police over the following nights, events widely credited with catalyzing the modern LGBTQ rights movement. Subsequent annual demonstrations evolved into what are now Pride marches in New York and worldwide. The Stonewall Inn remains a designated National Historic Landmark.
