Barnes Foundation - art collection of Albert C. Barnes

The Barnes Foundation was established by Albert C. Barnes in 1922 to advance art education and housed an extraordinary collection assembled by Barnes, an early 20th-century chemist and collector. Its holdings include more than 800 Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early Modern paintings, notably works by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. Barnes originally located the foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania; the collection moved to its current building on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in 2012. The foundation's acquisition and display practices reflected Barnes's pedagogical aims and have been the subject of public and legal debate.
