Center Market demolished for Federal Triangle

Center Market served as Washington, D.C.'s principal public market from the early 19th century until it was demolished in 1931 as part of the Federal Triangle redevelopment. The market occupied the block roughly between Pennsylvania Avenue and B Street NW from 7th to 9th Streets; its removal displaced many vendors and wholesale businesses. Photographs, city records, and contemporary newspaper accounts document the demolition and salvage of some architectural elements. The National Archives Building and other federal offices now occupy much of the former market site.
