Newark Female Charitable Society

Founded in 1803, the Newark Female Charitable Society is the oldest social organization in New Jersey and the third oldest in the United States. Located at 305 Halsey Street, this historic site features a Victorian Eclectic building designed by R. H. Rowden, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Originally aimed at providing aid without fostering dependency, the Society has evolved into the Newark Day Center, offering various community programs including child development and senior services.
