Richards Building

The Richards Building served as the headquarters for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey from 1871 until its demolition in 1929. Located in Washington, D.C., just south of the Capitol, it was designed by architect Adolf Cluss in the Rundbogenstil style, featuring red brick walls and a distinctive patterned slate roof. Originally built with a hotel-like layout, it faced challenges in accommodating the survey's operational needs. The building was purchased by the government in 1891 but was deemed inadequate by the early 20th century, leading to the survey's relocation and the eventual construction of the Longworth House Office Building on its site.
