Aldenham Works

Aldenham Works, located near Elstree in Hertfordshire, was the main bus overhaul facility for London Transport from its opening in 1956 until its closure in 1986. Renowned for its comprehensive operations, it overhauled up to 50 buses weekly, transforming them to 'as new' condition. Originally intended for a Northern line extension, the site was repurposed post-World War II for bus maintenance, featuring advanced facilities like a test circuit and tilt test shed. The works employed up to 2,500 staff and utilized a production line approach, allowing for efficient repairs and modifications. Although the buildings were demolished in 1996, Aldenham remains a significant part of London's transport history, showcasing the evolution of bus maintenance and engineering.
