Logan International Airport built on reclaimed harbor land

Logan International Airport in East Boston occupies large areas of land that were created by 19th- and 20th-century landfill projects that filled tidal flats and marshes in Boston Harbor. Successive expansions added runways and terminals on artificial fill rather than natural shoreline, making a major international airport located largely on reclaimed land. The airport is connected to the mainland by causeways and bridges built to span the former harbor areas.
