Guardian telephone exchange

The Guardian Exchange, an underground telephone exchange in Manchester, was constructed between 1954 and 1957 as a hardened communication facility designed to withstand nuclear war. It connects the UK government to the US via a secure transatlantic cable. Located over 35 meters underground, the complex features extensive tunnels, a goods lift, and even amenities like sleeping quarters and a bar. Although now primarily serving as a cable route, its historical significance as a nuclear bunker and its role in telecommunications make it a fascinating site for tourists and researchers alike. The exchange gained notoriety in 2004 when a fire disrupted thousands of telephone lines in the region.
