Frequent disappearances by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge

Since the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937 it has been a recurrent site of suicide jumps; by the 2010s more than 1,600 deaths had been recorded at the bridge. Jumpers who enter the bay are often swept away by strong currents, and in many cases bodies are not recovered. The scale of these disappearances has driven ongoing mitigation efforts, including crisis hotlines, patrols, and plans for a suicide barrier.
