200 Clarendon Street (John Hancock Tower)

200 Clarendon Street, commonly called the John Hancock Tower, is a landmark minimalist glass skyscraper designed by I. M. Pei & Partners and completed in 1976. At approximately 60 stories, it is the tallest building in New England and is noted for its reflective glass facade which mirrors the Back Bay skyline. The tower became well known in its early years for facade problems-several panes of glass failed and were subsequently replaced-an episode that is frequently cited in studies of modern curtain-wall design. It remains a prominent example of late-20th-century corporate modernist architecture in Boston.
