1977 Hanafi Siege at the District Building (John A. Wilson Building)

From March 9–11, 1977, members of the Hanafi Muslim sect seized three buildings in Washington, D.C., including the District Building (now the John A. Wilson Building), taking hostages and demanding redress for grievances. The siege ended after negotiations involving Muslim leaders and diplomats, with hostages released and perpetrators arrested and prosecuted. The event remains a notable domestic hostage crisis in the city's history.
