End of passenger service and long vacancy at Michigan Central Station

Michigan Central Station at 2001 15th Street closed to regular passenger rail service in 1988 and thereafter stood vacant for decades, becoming an iconic abandoned structure in Detroit. The station's long period of disuse represented a disappearance of active rail service and commercial function from a major transportation hub. The property was purchased by Ford Motor Company in 2018 for redevelopment efforts.
