Happy Bottom Riding Club

The Happy Bottom Riding Club, operated by aviator Florence 'Pancho' Barnes from 1935 to 1953, was a unique dude ranch and social hub near Edwards Air Force Base in California's Mojave Desert. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, it attracted test pilots and Hollywood elites, boasting over 9,000 members at its peak. The club featured amenities like an airstrip, swimming pool, and rodeo stadium, and became famous for its tradition of offering free steak dinners to pilots who broke the sound barrier. Despite its popularity, the club faced challenges from the military, leading to a series of lawsuits and its eventual destruction by fire. Today, remnants of the club can still be seen, and it remains a significant part of aviation history, celebrated by Air Force personnel and featured in various media, including Tom Wolfe's 'The Right Stuff.'
