Montgomery Block

The Montgomery Block, a historic building in San Francisco, California, was active from 1853 to 1959 and was renowned as the city's first fireproof and earthquake-resistant structure. Located at 628 Montgomery Street, it became a Bohemian hub, attracting notable figures such as Mark Twain, Jack London, and Ambrose Bierce. Designed by architect G.P. Cummings, it was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River at its completion. Despite surviving the 1906 earthquake, it was demolished in 1959, replaced by the Transamerica Pyramid. The site remains a registered California Historical Landmark, celebrated for its rich cultural legacy.
