Coit Tower and WPA Murals

Coit Tower, completed in 1933 at 1 Telegraph Hill Blvd, was funded by a bequest from Lillie Hitchcock Coit and built as a civic memorial. Its interior houses murals painted in 1934 by a group of artists associated with New Deal art programs, depicting California life; some murals generated contemporary controversy for left-leaning political imagery, a point documented by historical sources. The tower's reinforced-concrete shaft is a noted example of 1930s Art Moderne civic architecture in San Francisco.
