Fort Negley - buried Civil War earthworks and foundations

Fort Negley is a Civil War–era stone and earth fortification south of downtown Nashville that was largely covered by soil and vegetation after the war. Archaeological investigations and later restoration work have exposed buried stonework, foundations, and military artifacts from the fort. Excavations and historical research at the site documented its 1862 construction and the role of African American laborers in building the fort; recovered artifacts and exposed masonry are interpreted on-site.
