Fort Mifflin - Revolutionary War defense ordered by George Washington

Fort Mifflin on the Delaware River was the site of a prolonged 1777–1778 siege during the American Revolution; its defenders delayed British resupply to troops occupying Philadelphia. General George Washington and the Continental Congress regarded the fort's defense as strategically important during the Philadelphia campaign, and Washington directed support for its garrison. The site is preserved as Fort Mifflin Historic Site with surviving earthworks and restored structures interpreting the siege.
