Milwaukee Soldiers Home (Old Main)

The Milwaukee Soldiers Home, completed in 1867, is one of only three surviving soldiers' homes in the United States, originally built for the rehabilitation of Civil War veterans. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark District, it features 24 additional historic buildings within its grounds. After years of neglect and a period of unoccupancy starting in 1989, a successful campaign in 2011 led to its preservation. Restoration efforts began in 2019, supported by the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in American military history and historic preservation.
