Philadelphia City Hall - largest free‑standing masonry building

Philadelphia City Hall, designed by John McArthur Jr. and completed in 1901, is widely cited as the world’s largest free‑standing masonry building constructed without a steel frame. The building is topped by a 37‑foot bronze statue of William Penn by sculptor Alexander Milne Calder. It occupies the central block at Broad and Market Streets and serves as the seat of Philadelphia municipal government.
