Kandy General Post Office

The Kandy General Post Office, established in 1820, is a historic landmark in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Originally opened under the direction of Louis Sansoni, it has evolved significantly over the years, including the introduction of the first mail coach service in 1832 and the establishment of telegraph connections in 1857. The current building, constructed in 1867 and formerly the Railway Hotel, was repurposed as a post office in 1902. Recognized as an Archeological Protected Monument in 2005, the site has faced modern challenges, including attempts to privatize its operation. However, conservation efforts are underway to preserve its historical significance, making it a point of interest for tourists and researchers alike.
