Shepard Block

The Shepard Block is a historic rowhouse located at 298–304 Essex Street in Salem, Massachusetts, built in 1851 by Michael Shepard. This striking structure features four brick residences, each three bays wide and 3.5 stories high, with distinctive granite lintels on the second and third floors. Originally designed for residential use, the ground floors were later adapted for retail storefronts in the 19th century. The building showcases charming architectural details, including clapboarded gable end dormers and slender brick chimneys. Recognized for its historical significance, the Shepard Block was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, making it a noteworthy stop for tourists and researchers interested in Salem's rich architectural heritage.
