Winchester Mystery House and Sarah Winchester legend

The Winchester Mystery House at 525 S Winchester Blvd was continuously expanded by Sarah Winchester from about 1884 until her death in 1922 and is noted for maze-like corridors, staircases to nowhere, and other architectural oddities. A longstanding tall tale holds that Winchester believed she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles and that perpetual construction would appease them. Historians and architectural researchers dispute aspects of that story and offer alternative explanations for the house's eccentric design.
