Ben's Chili Bowl (U Street)

Founded in 1958 by Ben Ali and Virginia Ali, Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street NW has been a longstanding community gathering spot and cultural landmark. The restaurant remained open during the 1968 riots and has hosted civil rights figures and entertainers from the neighborhood. In January 2009 President Barack Obama visited Ben's after his inauguration, drawing national attention to the site.
