Stora Barnhuset

Stora Barnhuset, founded in 1633 in Stockholm, was Sweden's largest orphanage, known for its significant role in child care until its closure in 1922. Initially a private institution, it became public in 1637, providing shelter and education to orphans and foundlings. The orphanage underwent major reforms in 1785, focusing on placing children in foster homes rather than long-term residency. Over its operational years, it admitted around 20,000 children, with a notable location at the intersection of Drottninggatan and Barnhusgatan. Today, the legacy of Stora Barnhuset continues through its charitable foundation, which supports research in children's care.
