Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church

Founded by Richard Allen in 1794, Mother Bethel is the founding congregation of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination and is a documented center of early African American religious and community life in Philadelphia. The site includes historic cemetery plots and archival records that trace Black communal institutions in the city. The church building and congregation have been continuously associated with AME denominational leadership and historic civil rights activities in Philadelphia.
