Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum opened in 1903 in a building designed to resemble a 15th-century Venetian palace and was created to house Gardner's personal art collection. In 1990, the museum was the scene of one of the largest art thefts in history when 13 works were stolen and remain missing. The museum preserves Gardner's original installation arrangement as required by her bequest.
