Tremont House (Chicago)

The Tremont House was a historic hotel in Chicago, originally established in 1833 and known for being the city's first hotel. It underwent several iterations, with the third version opening in 1850 as a luxurious five-and-a-half-story structure featuring 260 rooms and modern amenities. The hotel was a significant social hub, hosting prominent figures like Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. It played a crucial role during the 1860 Republican National Convention and was a residence for many notable Chicagoans. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, but a fourth iteration opened in 1873. The Tremont House's legacy reflects the evolution of hospitality in Chicago and its impact on the city's development.
