Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary opened in 1829 and introduced the 'Pennsylvania system' of separate confinement, influencing prison design worldwide. Its radial cellblock layout and individual cells were intended to encourage penitence through isolation. Notable inmates included gangster Al Capone, who was held there briefly in 1929. The prison closed in 1971 and now operates as a museum and historic site.
