Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum art heist

On March 18, 1990, thieves disguised as police officers entered the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole 13 works of art valued at an estimated $500 million, including paintings by Vermeer and Rembrandt. The theft remains unsolved and is the largest property theft in U.S. history by dollar value. The museum continues to display empty frames and maintains the original arrangement as part of its ongoing interpretation of the crime.
