State Public School at Coldwater

The State Public School at Coldwater, established in 1871 in Michigan, was a pioneering institution aimed at educating and caring for dependent children, including orphans and those from poor backgrounds. Spanning 160 acres with cottages designed to create a homelike environment, it served as a model for similar schools across the United States. In 1935, it was renamed Michigan Children's Village, focusing on children with mild mental impairments. The site transitioned to a correctional facility in 1985 and closed in 2011, with some buildings demolished in 2019, marking the end of an era in child welfare.
