Reed Homestead

The Reed Homestead, built circa 1809 in Townsend Harbor, Massachusetts, is a historic house museum renowned for its well-preserved murals by Rufus Porter, a notable figure in American art and the founder of Scientific American. These murals, dating from 1800 to 1835, are among the finest examples of Porter's work, with few surviving due to damage over the years. The federal-style house has been home to four generations of the Reed family and showcases original furnishings, wide pine floors, and crown glass windows, preserving much of its 19th-century charm. Operated by the Townsend Historical Society, the museum is open to visitors Tuesday through Friday, offering a glimpse into early American life and art.
