A Subtlety (Kara Walker) at the Domino Sugar Refinery

A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby, was a site-specific temporary installation by Kara Walker installed inside the decommissioned Domino Sugar Refinery in Williamsburg in 2014. Commissioned by Creative Time, the work centered on a monumental sphinx-like sculpture coated in sugar and a series of smaller sugar-coated figures that referenced the refinery's industrial and racial histories. The installation was open to the public from May to July 2014 and drew international attention for its scale and subject matter.
