Hotaling Building (Jackson Square)

The Hotaling Building, constructed in the mid-19th century for a whiskey wholesaler, is a surviving commercial building in the Jackson Square Historic District that endured the 1906 earthquake and fires while much of the surrounding area burned. Its rooftop 'Hotaling' sign and cast-iron features have made it a locally recognized architectural landmark. The building is frequently cited in accounts of San Francisco's post-Gold Rush commercial development and historic preservation efforts.
