Smithsonian Institution Building (The Castle)

The Smithsonian Institution Building, commonly called the 'Castle,' was completed in 1855 and designed by architect James Renwick Jr. It was built of red Seneca sandstone and originally housed the Smithsonian's collections and research facilities. Today it functions as the Smithsonian Visitor Center and contains administrative offices and exhibition space. The building is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
