Fort Independence (Castle Island)

Fort Independence is a granite star-shaped fort on Castle Island whose current structure was built as a Third System coastal fortification between 1833 and 1851. The site has hosted successive fortifications since the 17th century and the present fort retains its historic masonry bastions and casemates. It is interpreted as an example of 19th-century U.S. military engineering and coastal defense architecture.
