Joe Louis Arena (former)

Joe Louis Arena opened in 1979 and was named for heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis; it served as the home of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings from 1979 through the 2016–17 season. The arena hosted numerous Stanley Cup playoff games, concerts, and other major events during its operation. It closed in 2017 and was demolished in 2020 as part of redevelopment of the area.
