Deacon John Bailey House

The Deacon John Bailey House, located at 1235 Congress Street in Portland, Maine, is a significant historic residence built between 1730 and 1756. Recognized as one of the most important Pre-Revolutionary War-era houses in the city, it features bricks believed to have been fired on-site. Originally a one-storey home, a second level was added in 1807. The house survived both the 1775 burning of Falmouth and the great fire of 1866, making it a rare historical landmark. It has been owned by various descendants of its original builder, John Bailey, and is currently home to Heller Washam Antiques. The building was surveyed by the Historic American Building Survey in 1936, highlighting its architectural and historical significance.
