Caspar Ott Cabin

The Caspar Ott Cabin, built in 1837, is the oldest standing building in Lake County, Illinois, and is located in the Deerfield Historic Village. This single-room log cabin was home to Caspar Ott, a French tailor, and his German wife Elisabetha, where they raised their seven children. Notably, the cabin served as a refuge for a runaway enslaved man named Andrew Jackson in 1858, who found shelter through the Underground Railroad. After being rediscovered in 1970, the cabin was moved to its current location and underwent renovations completed in 2001. The Historic Village also features other historic buildings, making it a fascinating destination for tourists and researchers interested in local history.
