Japanese Tea Garden in a former limestone quarry

The Japanese Tea Garden sits inside Brackenridge Park in a sunken basin that was originally a limestone rock quarry, giving the garden its distinctive lowered topography and rockwork features. In the 1930s the abandoned quarry was transformed into terraced gardens, stone bridges, a pond, and a pagoda, reusing the quarry walls and rock for landscape features. The garden's origin as a repurposed industrial excavation creates an unusual urban landscape contrast within the park.
