Liberty Hotel (former Charles Street Jail)

The building at 215 Charles Street began life as the Charles Street Jail, a mid-19th-century jail designed by Gridley J.F. Bryant. The structure was redeveloped and reopened as the Liberty Hotel; during the conversion many original jail features-including the central rotunda, narrow cell-like alcoves, and some original masonry-were preserved and are visible in public areas and guest rooms. The site thus contains concealed, carceral-era architecture embedded within a modern hotel.
