Grand Central Hotel (Omaha, Nebraska)

The Grand Central Hotel, once a premier lodging in downtown Omaha, was established in 1873 after a lengthy construction delay due to funding issues. Promoted as the largest hotel between Chicago and San Francisco, it featured elegant architectural details and luxurious interiors. However, financial troubles plagued the hotel, leading to a foreclosure in 1878. Tragically, a fire caused by an unattended candle destroyed the hotel shortly after renovations were completed, resulting in the loss of five firefighters' lives. This incident prompted the transition of Omaha's fire department to a professional status. The site later became home to the Paxton Hotel in 1882.
