Palace of the Legion of Honor and Alma de Bretteville Spreckels

The Palace of the Legion of Honor was donated to the city by collector and socialite Alma de Bretteville Spreckels and opened in 1924 as a Beaux-Arts museum modeled on the French Musée de l'Orangerie. Spreckels played a central role in founding and endowing the museum in memory of her husband, sugar magnate Adolph B. Spreckels, and the institution houses European paintings, ancient art, and a notable cast of Auguste Rodin's The Thinker. The museum overlooks the Golden Gate and is part of the Lincoln Park cultural complex.
